Research project to develop a biological tick trap

Supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (SME Central Innovation Program) we aim at developing a biological trap against the European Sheep Tick, Ixodes ricinus (Figure 1). The innovative method relies on the attractive effect of CO2 and further specific tick attractants and arrestants which are released by a biopolymer based capsule system. Further, the system will be equipped with an entomopathogenic fungus which kills the allured tick.


Besides the IS Insect Services GmbH, also the technical college Bielefeld, the University of Hohenheim and the firm Biocare GmbH are involved in that project.
